SXSW Q&A: Miracles of Modern Science
Published on February 8th, 2012 | Jonny Abrams
It’s SXSW time in Austin, Texas next month, so Rocksucker fired off some carefully considered questions to bands who shall be performing there, specifically those on the really rather splendid roster of artist development agency Solid Gold. Next up, it’s New York’s finest purveyors of energetic chamber-pop Miracles of Modern Science…
“Eating Me Alive”
Hello! How are you?
Not too shabby. As of writing this answer, hungry.
Where and when will you be performing?
Still up in the air at the moment, which is a bit scary. We’ll be playing anywhere and everywhere we can that week, be it on a street corner or in an amphitheatre (though the former is much more likely).
If you’ve been to SXSW before, what were your most memorable experiences of it? If you haven’t, what manner of crazy crap have you heard about it that you’re looking forward to checking out for yourself?
We’re really excited for when they light the burning man on fire.
“524”
Which other bands are you looking forward to seeing?
One of our favorite shows ever was opening for Micachu & The Shapes, so we’re very psyched to have a chance to catch them on our side of the pond again. We’re also planning on attending as many panels as possible. We always intend to go to panels whenever CMJ rolls around, but our day jobs usually end up winning out. It’ll be nice to have the chance to do it in Austin.
Have you got a decent place to sleep lined up, or are you going to be “roughing it”?
It’ll be couches and floors for us.
Are you a fan of festival food? Any particular favourites?
We heard that one year they made deep fried beer. Given that, we’re not sure what to expect…but it sounds like we’ll be fans of it.
“Luminol”
Will you be taking any of the following with you: hand sanitizer, baby wipes, earplugs, a fanny bag (or bum bag as we call them on our side of the pond), a flashlight, a miniature fan, a pop-up tent, an inflatable mattress and/or pillow, a fold-up chair, or other (please specify)?
All of a sudden we’re feeling very unprepared…
Do you have any helpful, practical advice for our readers (SXSW-related or otherwise?)
Rely on your fans. We weren’t having much luck getting responses from venues about playing on the way to Austin. As soon as we reached out to our fans for help, things started locking into place, even if it means that we might end up playing a few shows in people’s living rooms.
“Space Chopper”
What else have you got lined up for 2012?
We have two music videos in the works, one currently in post-production, so those should see the light of day soon. We’ll also try to play as many out of town shows as possible, particularly places missed on the way to and from Austin.
Do you have any suggestions for additional questions to use in the future should this particular Q&A catch on?
I think you did a fine job! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to chat.
Miracles of Modern Science, thank you.
