SXSW Q&A: Jamuel Saxon
Published on February 6th, 2012 | Jonny Abrams
It’s SXSW time in Austin, Texas next month, so Rocksucker fired off some carefully considered questions to bands who shall be performing there, specifically those on the really rather splendid roster of artist development agency Solid Gold. Next up, it’s San Diego’s finest emergent purveyor of darkly playful/playfully dark electro-pop Keith Milgaten aka Jamuel Saxon…
“Planetarium”
Hello! How are you?
Doing well! I am 100 days clean and sober today.
If you’ve been to SXSW before, what were your most memorable experiences of it? If you haven’t, what manner of crazy crap have you heard about it that you’re looking forward to checking out for yourself?
One time I frantically took a cab to a museum where my friend Treasure Mammal was playing. As soon as the cab pulled up, I threw cash at the drive and sprinted directly to the drum set on the parking lot stage. I then proceed to percussively reinforce the remainder of Treasure Mammal’s songs, which turned into an impromptu drum-line scenario. Also, this random guy had amazing BBQ sandwiches at a house show later that night. The BBQ was comparable.
Which other bands are you looking forward to seeing?
Love Inks, Cuckoo Chaos (my big bro’s band), Future Islands, Tape Deck Mountain, Roar (if they are going!). NOT SALEM!!
“1000 Centipedes”
Have you got a decent place to sleep lined up, or are you going to be “roughing it”?
Our old housemate Travis from Tape Deck Mountain is living in Austin now. We are going to mob his apartment until we wear out our welcome. There are also plans of occasionally sleeping in the RVIP, a huge LED-covered RV that we will be travelling to Austin in.
Are you a fan of festival food? Any particular favourites?

Will you be taking any of the following with you: hand sanitizer, baby wipes, earplugs, a fanny bag (or bum bag as we call them on our side of the pond), a flashlight, a miniature fan, a pop-up tent, an inflatable mattress and/or pillow, a fold-up chair, or other (please specify)?
Definitely my custom earplugs, possibly fanny pack, baby powder fo sho, flashlight, posture-pedic pillow and laptop for DJ sets.
“Civilized!”
Do you have any helpful, practical advice for our readers (SXSW-related or otherwise?)
Don’t go to SXSW if you’re in a band with your girlfriend. It worked out terribly for me in 2010.
What else have you got lined up for 2012?
We are going to start touring a lot, hopefully with the help of a booking agent. We are also in the beginning stages of writing a new full-band album for the first time in Jamuel history, as opposed to me writing everything and teaching it to the guys afterwards. Other than that, make a bunch of remixes and get a lot of exercise!
Do you have any suggestions for additional questions to use in the future should this particular Q&A catch on?
What is your best SXSW celebrity encounter? I once heard of Bill Murray randomly taking over as bartender at a saloon in Austin. Ha!
Jamuel Saxon, thank you.
“Crackula” (as Keith Sweaty)
Jamuel Saxon has some San Diego shows set up for February as a full band, and he’ll be hitting Pomona and Vegas doing solo/DJ sets under the name Keith Sweaty. For more information and a list of live dates, please visit jamuelsaxon.net
