Singles of the Week! Get yer Singles of the Week! Right here, on this page, while they’re hot!

This week, the following lot did it for us…

Lxury – “J.A.W.S”

Co-produced by Disclosure, as you might be able to glean from the sensual deep house vibe. In case you didn’t know, deep house is probably the best kind of music to use the word ‘vibe’ in discussion of.

It just vibes, dunnit? Oh yes it dun! This one’s got some lush squishy synth binding it together, practically demanding quails of us. Gladly.

MØ feat. Diplo – “XXX 88″

Succeeds in being plenty moody and plenty fun all at once. Darn tasty vocals, and a slight soca kick to the rhythm for extra added mmm-hmm.

Also recommended for fans of uh-huh, ooh-yeah and FNURP!. We made that last one up but we trust it shall catch on.

The Wave Pictures – “Lisbon”

Is that their dads playing the song in the video? Whatever, this is a daftly sophisticated/sophisticatedly daft little march with a bassline that Hoedowns more hoes than you’ve ever downed.

Lorde – “Royals”

Damn, this is really quite impressive. It’s sparsely produced but not founding wanting for melody, both rich and conceivably…*gulp*…mainstream.

Soul-tinged, even a little psych-tinged with the thick layers of beaming harmonies that come shooting out of it, but sugary sweet enough to wrong-foot you. More of this kind of thing, please.

Jungle – “The Heat”

You know…electronifunk. With loads of colours floating about in it. And a sense of drama: put all of that together and you’ve got yourselves a kind of synthier Burning House.

Sorry, we’ll stop calling you Cynthia.

Toy – “Join the Dots””

Driving kinda fuzz-rock that erupts with irrepressible shafts of explosive light from within. Sends distortion hurtling heavenwards like a speeding rocket until you start to wonder if maybe you should evacuate the premises and look for some sort of bunker.

Does that mean we like it? Yes.

Ducktails – “Honey Tiger Eyes”

Presumably it’s supposed to sound as if it’s starting mid-stream. Matt Mondanile’s The Flower Lane LP of earlier this year is gorgeously fuzzed-up psych-pop à la Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and all the good stuff like that…and “Honey Tiger Eyes” is in no mood to partypoop.

Ducktails: great kids’ cartoon, great Real Estate spin-off.

Post War Glamour Girls – “Lightbulb”

Melodramatically literate odd-rock with a suitably darkside animated video. Creaky, creepy and captivating stuff, laid out ever so thoughtfully too.

Slamboree – “Cheeky Peepers”

It’s certainly cheeky…very cheeky stuff indeed from the “pyro-circus dub rave massive”.

Piling out of a taxi in true ‘urban big top’ fashion, Slamboree slam down a chunky beat and ply it with jigging gypsy fiddle, breakneck rhymes and a whacking great buzzsaw of synth.

Daft as Basil Brush brushing his snout with two brushes at once in syncopated brushstrokes, and a nifty demonstration of what makes them such a compelling festival attraction.

Gaz Coombes – “Buffalo”

The erstwhile Supergrass fella made one of last year’s finest albums in Here Come the Bombs and, going by this celestial eruption of a space ballad, he’s got something even more spectacular stashed up his sidies.

Many have tried and not quite succeeded in balancing incisive songwriting with bleepy electronics. Coombes has always brought a hefty wad of ingenuity to everything he’s done, so it’s no surprise to see him assimilating everything so seamlessly.

Single of the week.
