Ten Worst Songs of 2013 – 7. “Losing Days” by Frank Turner
Published on December 2nd, 2013 | Jonny Abrams
Our countdown of the ten worst songs of 2013 continues apace with “Losing Days” by ‘punk folk’ chap Frank Turner, whose chiming acoustic guitar sound is ideally suited to expensive guitar stereos.
Alas, the poor lad still can’t seem to stave off the Snow Patrollification – and, in this case, a side order of Travisification – that may swell his coffers yet ultimately diminishes his worth as a human being at a rate of knots.
“Losing Days” is intended to be a bittersweet rumination on the aging process, and there is a vaguely appeasing sort of honesty about it; no Bastille-ish affectations to his singing, no shoehorning in synths just for the sake of it…unfortunately not much of a tune either, mind, but still we’ve heard much worse.
Turner’s presence in our top ten, then, owes much to the notion that he really should know better. Oh, and to lyrics such as the following:
“I remember well the day that I got my first tattoo / I was so scared before and after, I was so proud when it was new / But these days I’ve gone and got me many more / And sometimes I get more when I get bored”
Hmmm. Get tattoos when bored. Good advice.
One listen to “Losing Days” and now Rocksucker looks like this…
Eep!
He’s not Billy Bragg, he’s a very ordinary boy.
