Annie Annie… Not to be confused with the musical of the same name

The rest of this week’s singles: Annie, Swim Deep, New Build and more!

Published on August 1st, 2013 | Jonny Abrams

Here, with all the crushing predictability that you’ve come to depend on us for, are the rest of this week’s singles…

Annie – “Back Together”

Like a boring version of “I Should Be So Lucky”.

Bafflingly, this is single of the week over at Drowned in Sound. Furthermore, the reviewer mentions Jeff Mangum, Jonathan Richman and John McKeown in his blurb.

Mind you, the writer in question spent the entirety of last week’s column wittering on about how great Johnny Borrell is, so we shouldn’t be all that surprised.

What happened to the gal who used to do their singles round-ups before? Wendy Roby? She was good.

We digress. Kylie B-side.

C2C – “Down the Road”

Sultry blues by way of early ’80s hip-hop, with scratches aplenty and pitch-meddled vocals for extra added disorientation.

C2C are conceivably Nantes’s finest turntablists. Bravo!

Jaws – “Gold”

Loud, yet graced by a subtle key shift in the chorus that energises and feels like the sun hitting the back of your neck. Aahh.

Sounds like Dawn of the Replicants ripping off Nirvana, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

New Build – “False Thing”

Nicely eccentric squelchathon that takes the form of a sultry duet with some killer lyrics in its midst.

A rattling percussive breakdown joined by synth-hewn Catherine Wheel and the deal is sealed. Dig the popping bass line, too.

PINS – “Stay True”

Builds up a fair old mountain of reverby sparseness without doing anything particularly interesting. This somewhat identikit form. of grandiosity is reflected in how they stylise their name

For you see, PINS are yet another band who clearly think they were hitting on a good idea by ‘caps locking’ themselves. Many more of these and we might start refusing to cooperate altogether.

Wouldn’t it be funny if they all landed on the same bill? It would be like everyone turning up to a party wearing the same outfit.

‘Pins’. Not so smart now, eh?

Unless of course it’s an acronym for something, in which case we apologise.

San Cisco – “Awkward”

Oh great, another song about texting. The video is vomitingly twee, it’s only fair to warn you.

If Mystery Jets were infuriating hipster kids, they’d be San Cisco. Some nice enough bleepery going on in amongst it all, though.

Swim Deep – “King City”

Quite nice.
