The best of this week’s singles: Sebadoh, Daft Punk, Black Onassis and more!

It’s the best of this week’s singles! Yes it is! You bloody love it!
And, perhaps, these…
Eagulls – “Nerve Endings”
Chug chug, boom boom, rant rant, waaauuurrrrggghhh: merely formulaic in the wrong hands, but when it’s invested with this much gleeful menace then it can be really quite a treat.
Promising stuff from the punky Leeds chaps.

Black Onassis – “Brain”
Ben Gautrey from erstwhile Rocksucker favourites The Cooper Temple Clause teams up with Kasabian guitarist Chris Karloff for a tune that sounds, if you’re familiar with the work of both of those bands, much like you’d expect.
That doesn’t mean it’s not a certain degree of ‘riveting’, though – Gautrey’s newer, more composed vocal style sits well atop the clattering beat, brooding synths and spiralling guitar work.
As you can see, though, it’s made us resort to music journo cliché. Just thought we’d acknowledge that before you all start fingering us (fnar).
Decent stuff, this – like something from the Coopers’ second album Kick Up the Fire, and Let the Flames Break Loose given a slight ‘big beat’ makeover.

Death Grips – “Birds”
Off. Its. ****ing. Rocker.
We can only smile, nod and ultimately approve.
Warning: definitely not for Mumford & Sons fans.

Daft Punk – “Lose Yourself to Dance”
Surely cannot be as huge as that other one featuring Pharrell Williams. Still pretty tremendous stuff though.
Why does this ‘official video’ only give us a minute of it? What’s that all about, eh?
Daft punks.

Villagers – “Earthly Pleasure”
A quite extraordinary and/or confusing track now granted a fitting video, one which adheres to Conor O’Brien’s extraordinary and/or confusing narrative within it.
Read our review of the album {awayland} for more yammering about this. You gotta hand it to them, they’re certainly set on some kind of boundary-pushing.

Sebadoh – “Defend Yourself”
It’s a first Sebadoh album in fourteen years! Or at least it will be. Lou Barlow and chaps are back and sounding all bouncy and exuberant in a way that’s very becoming of them.
Scratchy guitar chords ascend heavenwards, where they meet plinky harmonics and breezy harmonies that add up to sheer deliciousness. (No, we didn’t just use the same plural noun twice – read it back.)
We’d eat it, but we want you to hear it too. Single of the week.
