The Rest of This Week’s Singles: Palma Violets, Chase & Status, P!nk and more!

Here you go: the rest of this week’s singles. Do with them what you will…
Chase & Status feat. Louis M^ttrs – “Lost and Not Found”
The most interesting thing about this is Louis’s peculiar textual tic, and even that’s irritating.
This sounds like a weaker version of that remix of Olive’s “You’re Not Alone” that went to number 1 in 1998 or something like that. Perhaps that’s what the bald man is thinking about while he’s sitting in the bathtub crying (see video).
On the other hand, it’s fantastically fit for purpose. Grotty club nights and TV syncing opportunities? It’s all yours!
Ooh, look, ginger girl goes crazy with gun (again, see video). It’s all happening now: Cavani just scored a belting free kick for Uruguay!
Sorry, we’ve got the Confederations Cup on while we’re writing this. You don’t mind, do you?

Mark Knight feat. Sway – “Alright”
Sway seemed like a genuinely exciting talent a decade or so ago – at least, there was plenty on his This is My Demo debut to suggest bigger and better things to come – but he seems to have settled for trying to score the kind of vacuously suggestive club hits that this one conceivably could be.
He’s become a less annoying Wiley, basically, and that’s a shame.

Miguel – “Adorn”
Ooh, dig that grinding bass line. Rest of it’s a bit ‘smooth’ for our tastes but there’s always a nifty little production quirk on hand to mark Miguel as a cut or two above most of his peers.

Palma Violets – “Best of Friends”
We’d love to sit down with the dope who thought Palma Violets would be the next big thing and have them explain to us exactly why.
They are profoundly uninspiring in pretty much every way. Not offensively bad, just…meh. Even with all that tuneless shouting to latch onto and label as “thrillingly guttural” or what have you, it’s just…meh.

P!nk feat. Lily Allen – “True Love”
Two of the slightly more palatable teeny boppers team up for an account of what it’s like to love someone and hate them simultaneously, apparently from the perspective of a stick of bubble gum.
How nice for the stick of bubble gum to have finally found love.

Teleman – “Steam Train Girl”
The sort of driving, bass-walking, breezy-harmonied, wibbly-synthed thing that existed in the good parts of the ’80s.
If people will insist on recreating the decade that taste forgot – and goodness knows they will – then this is much more satisfying than the likes of Haim.

See you next week, everybody!
