Amplify Dot feat. Busta Rhymes - "I'm Good" Amplify Dot… Polka face

The rest of this week’s singles: Johnny Marr, Amplify Dot, Visage and Big Deal

Here, somewhat perfunctorily, are the rest of this week’s singles (at least the ones we could be bothered to write about)…

Amplify Dot feat. Busta Rhymes – “I’m Good”

Featuring Busta Rhymes on your track is usually good for a quail or two, so well done Amplify Dot on a canny move.

Her last single “Kurt Cobain” may have rubbed us up the wrong way on account of its missing the point somewhat, but it did contain flashes of promise in the form of her solid flow and abundant character.

The technique and eccentricity are present, correct and deserving of a less ‘obvious’ production than the de rigeur abrasive electro treatment it gets here.

There’s an M.I.A. or perhaps even a Missy Elliott lurking in there somewhere, if only she and/or the people surrounding her can look past Azealia Banks as an example worth following.

Worth keeping an eye on, basically.

Big Deal – “Dream Machines”

Layers of dripping shoegaze guitars, big crashing drums, lovely ‘slacker’-style boy/girl vocals…nice ingredients, though they do add up to something all too familiar-sounding.

A nice throwback, but no big deal (oh yes we did).

Johnny Marr – “New Town Velocity”

Johnny Meh, more like.

Sorry, yer man’s a genuine legend who deserves more respect than that. But come on, this is as dreary as Richard Ashcroft’s solo stuff.

It’s so uninspiring that we can’t even be bothered to think of a tenuous Smiths pun to sign this review off with.

Visage – “Dreamer I Know”

What is it about League Two ’80s bands making ‘triumphant’ comebacks that make them think they don’t need to develop their sound, at all, despite it being a third of a century on from their heyday?

Actually, given that approximately 75% of new bands are bafflingly in thrall to the decade, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised.

Maybe someone tipped them off. “Hey, you realise that all bands sound like you now?”

“By Jove! Dust down the Yamaha DX7s, lads; we’re going back in!”

That’s definitely how it happened. Anyway, “Dreamer I Know” isn’t bad per se…it’s just that it’s about as necessary as, ooh, let’s say, a derogatory simile for a totally innocuous pop song.
