Beck Beck… One again

The Best of This Week’s Singles: Beck, Phoenix, These New Puritans and more!

Beck to the future! Er, or something. We’ve got another new one from Mr Hansen and several more for you in this, The Best of This Week’s Singles…

These New Puritans – “And It’s Risen”

Goes from monged and mumbly to clacking ‘square wheel’ groove very suddenly, building from thereon with gently parping trumpet and stately, chiming piano.

TNP perhaps aren’t the most obvious of singles bands but “And It’s Risen” provides a nice little taster of their strange ways.

SPLASHH – “Feels Like You”

Another immediately gratifying round of fuzzy, jangly, spiky psych-pop from the Hackney chaps, whose apparent admiration of Deerhunter shines through here.

Big things conceivably await.

You can buy “Fells Like You” on iTunes or on Amazon.

Guards – “I Know It’s You”

Shades of Mercury Rev, Grandaddy and, as it rocks onwards and upwards, Dinosaur Jr.; all good things, if you ask us.

Send for the Guards!

You can buy “I Know It’s You” on Amazon.

MØ – “Waste Of Time”

Hits so many sweet spots its hard to know where to begin; this is what pop music should be sounding like, now that we’re basically in the future and all that.

If just one child downloads this instead of the new Rihanna single, it’ll all have been worth it.

You can buy “Waste of Time” on iTunes or on Amazon.

Phoenix – “Trying to Be Cool”

Not one of the most immediately striking tracks from the Frenchies’ recent Bankrupt! LP but a superior strand of synth-pop nonetheless.

It’s so sunnily disposed that you’ll google ‘sunnily’ to check if it is a word. Seems to check out.

You can buy “Trying to Be Cool” on iTunes or on Amazon.

Nadine Shah – “To Be a Young Man”

This is really quite stonkingly excellent, so we apologise in advance for bringing up such obvious reference points as PJ Harvey and Kate Bush. Good ones, though.

That great big sludgy honk of a lead guitar that announces the chorus is flippin’ brilliant.

“To Be a Young Man” is no barrel of laughs but it’s an arrestingly mighty proposition.

Beck – “I Won’t Be Long”

Funky ‘slacker’ rock with a mournful twist in a way that few others could even conceive of let alone pull off with so much, you know, aplomb.

At this stage we like it more than last week’s “Defriended” single; it takes more unexpected twists and turns, and despite making more of a traditionally laid-out ‘song’ of itself it still feels like a departure for Beck.

Can we expect another Beck single next week as well, then? On this form, it would be most welcome. Single of the week.

You can buy “I Won’t Be Long” on iTunes and on Amazon.
