The Rest of This Week’s Singles: Empire of the Sun, Savages, Daft Punk and more!

Might as well give you The Rest of This Week’s Singles, eh?
Be rude not to, like…
Big Deal – “In Your Car”
Alice Costelloe and Kacey Underwood ‘go electric’ to good effect, albeit without much in the way of originality. It hits some dark, grungey sweet spots, though, and comes packaged with an agreeably daft/sinister video, so we’re inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt. That slurred vocable refrain is a winner and all.

Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams – “Get Lucky”
Nice, sleek groove; nice, understated vocal from yer man Pharrell. Nice, swinging melody.
That’s about it, though: nice. Homework and Discovery feel like a long time ago when listening to this decidedly diminished return, but we’re willing to wait for the context of the album before we condemn it altogether.

Empire of the Sun – “Alive”
The Sleepy Jackson were pretty sweet, but we can’t attest to having heard much of Luke Steele’s newer project thus far. On this evidence, the melodic sensibility remains but now comes couched in fairly unneccessary-sounding electro-pop. Still pretty good, like, but nothing to get overly excited about.

Savages – “Shut Up”
Thankfully not a Kelly Osbourne cover, but its spoken word intro delays the release of tension for just a wee bit too long. Decent, driving fare other than that, although they’ve got better in them.

Witch Hunt – “Crawl”
Oh, great: over-earnest doom balladry ahoy.
Ooh, hang about: those are some nifty chord progressions.
Yeah, this is some affecting stuff.
Okay, we like this now.
See, as much as we like to think we’ve gotten to that stage where we can know whether or not we’ll like a song by its first fifteen seconds or so, every now and then something like this comes along and makes us feel rather foolish. We can only applaud that.

See you next week, everybody!
