Interview: Tony Resta

Published on September 3rd, 2012 | Jonny Abrams

Switzerland-based MC Tony Resta has just finished his new mixtape Grime Time, so Rocksucker fired him over some questions to find out a little bit more about how he operates…

How long have you been writing, recording and performing for?

I started writing my own songs in 2007 but things finally became a bit more serious in 2009 when I joined a local Swiss group called The Project. In 2009 we started writing and recording our first album but never finished it completely due to financial issues. The songs we did do were performed throughout 2010 and were quite successful.

How would you describe your music, if pushed?

My music is the typical style that either you like or you don’t like. I mix rap, grime and dubstep in my productions and so they style is quite unheard of outside of the UK and I think it has a lot of potential.

Where are you based?

Currently I live in Lugano, Switzerland, the biggest city in the Italian-speaking region of the country.

Is there a full album in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it?

I have just finished producing the Grime Time Mixtape which will be out on the 1st of January. The mixtape is quite different from the first one (The Overflow Mixtape) as it features a lot of grime/dubstep-oriented songs, a style unknown to a lot of people.

Where can we hear your music online?

All of my public songs can be heard directly on my official website at www.tony-resta.com . Most of these songs have official videos present on YouTube!

Which have been your most exciting gigs and/or overall moments so far?

I haven’t had the opportunity to perform many gigs yet in my career but the best so far would have to be at The Franklin College in Lugano. I really enjoy the 1-hour performance there as everybody knew the songs and the lyrics and we all had a great time together. Attendance was about 40 people.

Got any more coming up? (Gigs, that is…)

Nothing planned for this year as the new mixtape isn’t out yet, but performances will be the main focus in 2013 to fully promote the mixtape.

Finally, if you were forced to spend the rest of your days in solitary confinement, but were allowed to bring the entire works of five different musical artists along to tide you over, whose would you choose?

I’d have to say Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Xzibit and Sway (from the UK).

Tony Resta, thank you.
