Interview: Night Verses
Published on June 1st, 2012 | Jonny Abrams
Hollywood rockers, Night Verses are offering up their Out of the Sky EP as a free download on their official website, so Rocksucker fired over some questions to front man Douglas Robinson to find out a little bit more about the whole operation. First, though, check out this song from the EP…
How did you all meet, and how long has Night Verses been going for?
Night Verses has been official for about six months. We met when I had moved out to Hollywood to get away from my troubles back home in NYC. I ran into a friend who invited me to a show in the band’s hometown. I wanted to be away from music at this point because of all that was going on in my life but I decided to take the trip anyway. Thankfully I did…
How would you describe your music?
I don’t want to put any type of label or genre into it. It takes elements from music we all love as a unit and as individuals. Our influences range from Fiona Apple to Isis. It’s always weird telling people what you think your band sounds like. I would just say it’s an experience from the minds and hearts of four honest musicians who want to raise the bar.
Where are you based, and how do you approach recording music?
I live in NY and the others live in CA. We basically send recordings back and forth to track our ideas. However, this band is a full-time outfit and traveling back and forth on a regular basis has become the norm.
Is there a full album in the works? If so, what can you tell us about it? (Feel free to be as abstract as you like…)
We have a ton of songs. It’s actually funny because the EP we just released are the first four songs we have completed as a unit. People are going to be in for some serious surprises when it comes to the newer material we have been working on. Things have been progressing in a beautiful way and we can’t wait to show you what we have up our sleeves.
Where can we hear your music online?
You can download our whole EP for FREE at www.nightverses.com.
Which have been your most exciting gigs and/or overall moments so far?
We just recently played our first show ever at The Roxy in West Hollywood. It was pretty incredible to see over 200 kids at our first show singing the words to these tracks. Every moment has been a highlight thus far.
Got any more coming up? (Gigs, that is…)
We have a show in NYC on June 29th at The Studio at Webster Hall and then we have some UK plans in the works. We don’t want to give too much away yet… but news is coming.
Are there any obscure and/or up-and-coming acts that you’d like to recommend or give a shout-out to?
There’s a band called Thunder From Heaven that I think everyone should give a listen to. Intense and out-of-the-box music that is definitely anthemic for everyday life.
Finally, if you were forced to spend the rest of your days in solitary confinement, but were allowed to bring the entire works of five different artists along to tide you over, whose would you choose?
Fiona Apple, At The Drive-In, Bloc Party, Bjork and The Game.
Douglas Robinson, thank you.
