Manic Street Preachers

Manic Street Preachers... Less manic, less street and less preachy than ever

The rest of this week’s singles: Manic Street Preachers, M.I.A., Baby Queens and more!

The rest of this week’s singles – or at least the ones we could be bothered to write about – are as follows…

Baby Queens – “Red Light”

Gorgeous harmonies adorn this sultry little number, dripping with soulful special sauce and the innate togetherness of the various vocal styles.

Good stuff.

Fidlar – “Awkward”

Probably should have soundtracked some US high school comedy about fifteen years ago, but the wonky Graham Coxon guitar in the chorus is a certain amount of delightful.

King of Cats – “Bright Lightbulbs”

What…the…hell?

This is not an easy listen but it is wonderfully confusing. Hats off – and, indeed, hair off – to whoever these lo-fi oddballs may be.

Manic Street Preachers – “Show Me the Wonder”

No matter how, er, ‘cosy’ their songs got, you could still rely on the Manics to be concealing some kind of actual point or message in there somewhere.

Here, however? Orange juice advert music, Phoenix Nights video. The utter pointlessness of it all mightn’t have mattered so much if the song itself wasn’t so…*sigh*

A sad slump into comfortable middle age for a once great band.

M.I.A. – “Come Walk With Me”

Hmm…we love M.I.A., we do…but this tends towards indicating that ‘pop’ music just ain’t for her.

At least it flies off in barmy directions, so it kind of rescues itself. In fact, the more off-its-trolley it gets, the more it endears. It’s just a shame about that first thirty seconds or so.

Newton Faulkner – “Losing Ground”

Better than Frank Turner.
